The New Hampshire Psychologically Healthy

Workplace Award Program

Purpose

The goal of the NH PHWA program is to recognize New Hampshire organizations and businesses that demonstrate a commitment, through their policies and programs, to the health and well-being of both the organization and its employees.  We want to support organizations that understand the relationship between strong business performance and a healthy & engaged workforce.

Benefits of Applying

The PHWA application process provides businesses and organizations an opportunity to consider their workplace culture, policies, and programs with regard to both organizational performance and employee health and well-being.

Previous applicants have reported that going through this process was helpful in strategizing for the future, creating a clear message for new or potential employees about the advantages of working for that organization, and providing positive reinforcement to the entire organization for a job well done.

In addition, it is satisfying to receive public recognition in the state for doing what some businesses perceive as “optional” or “unnecessary”.  Also compelling is that NH winners have the opportunity to be nominated for a national award and to receive recognition on a national scale.

Categories of Award and Award Criteria

There is great diversity in the types of work settings, each with its unique set of challenges and strengths.  In order to fairly and adequately account for these differences, applicants may apply under one of the following five categories:

  1. Nonprofit
  2. Small, For-profit
  3. Medium, For-profit
  4. Large, For-profit
  5. Military/Government/Education

The programs, policies, and culture of an organization reflect its values and mission and so all organizations are evaluated using the following five criteria:

  1. Employee Input
  2. Employee Growth & Development
  3. Health & Safety
  4. Employee Recognition
  5. Work-Life Balance

Application and Evaluation Process

Except for the Site Visit, which occurs at the end of the application process, the majority of the application is completed electronically through a private account that you will set up when you register. The components of the application that are filed electronically include the following:

  • The “Main Application” that consists of checklists pertaining to the above criteria;
  • The “Organizational Practices Questionnaire” which consists of essay questions related to the programs and policies that relate to the five criteria listed above;
  • And, Employee Questionnaires, which are to be completed by individual employees and remain anonymous.  * In order to qualify for the award organizations must get a minimum of 10 or 10% of their employees (whichever is greater) to complete the questionnaire.
