Ethics Round Table Discussion: Ethical Issues Regarding Money in Professional Practice

Dr. Demment is a Counseling Psychologist who has been in practice in Hanover, NH since 1991. She conducts therapy for individuals, couples and groups. She has trained psychology interns, medical students and psychiatry residents. She has lectured to public, private and academic groups on topics, which include Psychotherapy, the Effects and Treatment of Trauma, and Women and Depression. Her research has been on Marital Satisfaction and the treatment of PTSD in female survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She is an Adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School.
Dr. Mills is an Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Dartmouth Medical School. He has been a licensed psychologist in New Hampshire since 1992. He has been the chair of the ethics advisory committee at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT since 2002 and is also a member of the ethics committee at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Mills has provided education in clinical ethics to psychology interns and psychiatry residents since 1991.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will review current APA Ethical Standards related to fees, abandonment, barter, pro bono work, gifts and collections.
2. Participants will learn how to establish a contract regarding fees and collections.
3. Participants will discuss specific ethical concerns such as establishing a sliding scale, what to do when a patient can no longer pay, and how to talk to patients about money.
4. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss specific examples of monetary dilemmas they have faced and to share solutions they have found.
