Challenges in Marital and Family Life

Marriage and other Romantic Relationships

The rewards in marriage and family life are truly abundant, but there also are many challenges. We all experience changes in our romantic relationships, and couples may seek counseling to address problems of communication, conflict resolution, intimacy, and trust.  These challenges can bring couples closer when addressed directly while collaborating with a trained professional.  Blended families, step-parenting, and co-parenting are other important areas for open communication and consultation.  Psychologists are trained to help sort out the variety of discomforts couples face, which can lead to greater satisfaction in these most important relationships.

Relationships with Children

Research points to the early child rearing years as most difficult for couples.  The old saying that “children do not come with instruction manuals” still carries a great truth. Modern times and technology have made parenting very different today compared to past generations.  If you are afraid you are falling out of touch with your children, a psychologist can help you to improve your family relationships.

Caring for Elders

Many of us regularly provide assistance for our aging parents.  Our elders may live with us rather than being cared for outside the home, especially in these difficult economic times.  The result is often and quite understandably that we are stressed both financially and emotionally. It is also challenging to see our loved ones becoming more and more dependent on others. These previously vital and viable family members can inadvertently cause us great pain as they cease to be who they once were.  Dealing with this stress may be overwhelming to many. Psychologists are trained to help us through these times to ensure the best quality of life possible for all concerned.
