When to Consult a Psychologist

Some individuals manage their stress by discussing concerns with friends, partners, and so on, but an objective, professional view from a psychologist might be a good option.  Psychologists also deal with many other issues such as helping with athletic performance, managing drug and alcohol problems, assessing for learning, attentional, or dementing disorders, training parenting skills, improving the quality of existing relationships, consulting with courts and attorneys, and assisting committees and boards in becoming effective operating units.  To learn more about the different types of psychologists click here.

You may find it helpful to consult with a psychologist during times of stress, emotional upheaval, or significant life changes (e.g., divorce, unemployment, medical illness).  Psychological treatment can be particularly helpful when it becomes difficult to manage one's daily affairs due to depression, anxiety, or other emotional difficulties.  For example, you may feel so preoccupied with personal concerns that it is difficult to focus at work, and a psychologist might be able to offer a fresh perspective and strategies to help you function better on a daily basis.
